The beauty of living in Malta is that we have so many lovely beaches, obviously being Maltese I am in love with the sea, but did that stop me since I had Sophia? Nope, not at all if you make sure to pack the right essentials and the right protection for your child you are good to go π
Now the question, what do I actually need? Every parent’s opinion will vary, but I will give you our version with the help of some research I have done throughout the web.
Let’s start with a positive note, having an infant is the best way to start going to the beach as they need your constant care and they will not wander off like toddlers so you can breathe a sigh of relief if your baby is still not fully independent, but if your child is younger than 2 months consult with your doctor if you can take them to the beach as at that age their immune system is very vulnerable.
Sophia is breastfed so we don’t have that hassle of preparing bottles, formula, thermos etc We have a meal-to-go every time, thanks to my wife π Below are the essentials for every infant:
- Nappies x3
- Swimming nappies x2
- Nappy Cream
- Poop bag
- Water Wipes
- Two swimsuits just in case one had an accident π
- Inflatable ring for your infant, buy according to weight
- Beach Towel
- Beach tent or Umbrella
- Sunscreen (I recommend 50 protection as our UV is very high)
- Light Babygrows (Preferably Cotton)
- If your baby is younger than 5 months and is breastfed, I would recommend a nursing pillow
- Packed lunches either prepared from home or ready-packed baby food (I recommend to keep this refrigerated in a cooler for example)
- Mineral water for the mother especially if she’s breastfeeding and for your child
- Try to avoid the peak hours where the sun is at its peak 10am – 4pm
- A Portable fan can be bought in any baby shop
- Beach Toys
An important thing to keep in mind are signs of “danger” which are signs of dehydration on your little one, these vary to:
- Dry mouth
- Dark Yellow Urine
- Signs of Inactivity
As I mentioned above if you have a shaded place, sunscreen and keeping hydrated you have nothing to worry about.
Enjoy Summer safely and go get some vitamin sea π€
